Ella Viitasuo (born May 27, 1996) is a Finnish ice hockey defender who competes internationally for the Finnish national team and at the professional club level. She is recognized for her contributions to Finland's success in major international tournaments during the late 2010s and early 2020s.
International Career Viitasuo has represented Finland in multiple IIHF Women's World Championships and Winter Olympic Games. She was a member of the Finnish squad that won the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang and repeated the achievement by winning bronze at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
One of her most notable international achievements occurred at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship held in Espoo, Finland. During this tournament, Viitasuo and the Finnish team secured a silver medal after a controversial overtime loss to the United States in the final. This marked the first time in the history of the tournament that a team other than Canada or the United States had reached the gold-medal game.
Club Career In domestic competition, Viitasuo has spent much of her career playing in the Naisten Liiga, the top tier of women’s ice hockey in Finland. She has had a long association with the Espoo-based franchise (competing under the names Espoo Blues, Espoo United, and Kiekko-Espoo), where she won multiple Finnish Championship titles (Aurora Borealis Cup).
Beyond the Finnish league, Viitasuo has played in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). She joined the club HV71 for the 2022–23 season, continuing her career in one of the most competitive women's professional leagues in Europe. Her style of play is generally characterized by defensive reliability and positional awareness.
