Elkin is a town located in both Surry and Yadkin counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Situated in the Piedmont region of the state, the town lies along the Yadkin River near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As of the 2020 United States Census, Elkin had a population of 4,523 residents.
History
The area that became Elkin was originally inhabited by the Saura and other Siouan-speaking tribes. European settlement began in the late 18th century, with the community developing around the Yadkin River's water power. In 1874, the town was incorporated and named after John W. Elkin, a local businessman and postmaster who contributed to the town's early growth. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century facilitated industrial development, particularly in textiles and furniture manufacturing.
Geography
Elkin occupies an area of approximately 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), of which 3.6 square miles (9.3 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) is water. The town’s elevation is about 895 feet (273 meters) above sea level. The Yadkin River runs along its western border, providing recreational opportunities such as fishing, kayaking, and riverside trails.

Historically, Elkin’s economy has been anchored by textile and furniture industries. In recent decades, the town has diversified its economic base to include healthcare, retail, and tourism. According to the 2020 census, the racial composition of Elkin was approximately 84% White, 7% African American, 2% Asian, 1% Native American, and 6% Hispanic or Latino of any race. The median household income was $44,800, with about 13% of the population living below the federal poverty line.

Public education is provided by the Yadkin County Schools system, which includes Elkin Elementary School, Elkin Middle School, and Elkin High School. The town is also served by the Yadkin County Public Library, a branch of the North Carolina State Library system.

Elkin is accessed primarily via U.S. Route 21, which runs north–south through the town, and North Carolina Highway 67, which connects to the city of Winston‑Salem to the east. The nearest interstate highway is I‑77, located approximately 20 miles west of the town. Commercial air service is available at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, about 80 miles to the east.
