Eliseo Mouriño

Eliseo Mouriño (born June 3, 1927 – died April 3, 1961) was an Argentine professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. He is widely regarded as one of Argentina's finest players of his era, known for his elegant style, leadership, and formidable presence on the field. Mouriño tragically died in a plane crash in 1961 while travelling with his Chilean club, Green Cross.

Early Life

Eliseo Víctor Mouriño was born on June 3, 1927, in Godoy Cruz, Mendoza, Argentina.

Club Career

Mouriño began his professional career with Club Atlético Banfield in 1948. He quickly established himself as a key player, known for his ability to break up opposition attacks and initiate plays from deep within the midfield. His strong performances earned him recognition as a rising talent in Argentine football.

In 1953, Mouriño joined Boca Juniors, where he spent the most significant period of his club career. With Boca, he became a central figure, revered by fans for his commitment and skill. He was instrumental in the team that won the Argentine Primera División in 1954, a much-celebrated title after a decade-long drought for the club. He remained with Boca Juniors until 1960, making over 200 appearances for the club and serving as a crucial leader on the pitch.

Towards the end of his career, Mouriño moved to Chile to play for Green Cross in 1960. He took on a player-manager role at the club, demonstrating his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.

International Career

Mouriño was a prominent member of the Argentina national football team during the 1950s. He earned 21 caps for his country. His international debut came in 1951.

He was a key player for the "La Albiceleste" squad that achieved significant success, winning the Copa América (South American Championship) twice, in 1955 and 1957. Mouriño's performances in these tournaments solidified his reputation as one of the continent's top midfielders.

He also represented Argentina at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. Despite the team's early exit from the tournament, Mouriño was a crucial component of the squad, showcasing his defensive solidity and playmaking abilities.

Playing Style

Eliseo Mouriño was renowned for his elegant yet robust playing style. As a defensive midfielder (often referred to as a half-back in his era), he possessed an exceptional ability to read the game, intercept passes, and execute precise tackles without resorting to excessive fouling. Eliseo Mouriño's life was tragically cut short on April 3, 1961, at the age of 33. He was one of 24 people who died when the Douglas DC-3 aircraft carrying the Green Cross football team and staff crashed into the Las Animas mountain range near Vilhena, Rondônia, Brazil. The team was returning from an away match in Osorno when the accident occurred. His death sent shockwaves through the football world, particularly in Argentina and Chile, mourning the loss of a talented player and respected figure.
