Description
Elachista solitaria is a small moth in the family Elachistidae. The adult has a wingspan of approximately 5–5.5 mm. The forewings are narrow and typically exhibit the muted coloration characteristic of many Elachista species, although detailed patterning is not extensively documented.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from the United States, with confirmed records from the states of Florida, Kentucky, and Ohio. Its presence is associated with habitats where host grasses of the genus Panicum occur.
Life Cycle and Ecology
Adults have been recorded on the wing from June to July. The larvae are leaf miners that feed on Panicum species. Mining activity is observable from the end of May through the end of June, during which the larvae create characteristic mines within the leaves of their host plants.
Taxonomic History
The species was first described by the American entomologist Annette F. Braun in 1922. Subsequent works, including Braun’s 1948 monograph “Elachistidae of North America (Microlepidoptera),” have provided additional details on its morphology and biology.
