Elachista bruuni

Elachista bruuni is a species of moth in the family Elachistidae. It was first described by entomologist E.C. Traugott‑Olsen in 1990 as part of a revision of the Elachista dispilella complex.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Lepidoptera
  • Family: Elachistidae
  • Genus: Elachista
  • Species: E. bruuni

The species name honors the Finnish lepidopterist Karl Bruun.

Description
Adult moths have a wingspan of approximately 8–10 mm. The forewings are predominantly white with two distinct black spots, while the hindwings are grey. The head and thorax are whitish, and the labial palps are also white. Males can be distinguished from closely related species such as E. nitidulella by subtle differences in wing coloration and genital morphology; the valva of E. bruuni is slightly longer and its cornutus group larger.

Distribution and Habitat
Elachista bruuni occurs in northern Europe, with confirmed records from Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and adjacent regions of Russia. The species inhabits sandy dune ecosystems where its larval host plants grow.

Biology and Ecology
The larvae are leaf miners that feed internally on the grass Festuca polesica. Adults are on the wing during June and July, typically flying at dusk. Their flight period coincides with the phenology of their host grasses in dune habitats.

Conservation Status
No specific conservation assessment has been published for E. bruuni. Its limited known distribution to specialized dune habitats may make it vulnerable to habitat loss, but detailed population data are lacking.
