Eileen Ryan (October 16, 1927 – October 9, 2022) was an American actress with a career spanning over six decades in film, television, and theatre. She was the mother of actors Sean Penn and Chris Penn, and musician Michael Penn, and the widow of actor and director Leo Penn.
Early Life and Career
Born Eileen Annucci in New York City, Ryan began her career on the stage. She made her Broadway debut in 1953 in the play ''Sing Till Tomorrow''. She also appeared in other Broadway productions such as ''Comes a Day'' (1958). Her early career showcased her versatility in various theatrical roles.Film and Television Career
Ryan transitioned to film and television in the late 1950s and 1960s, appearing in notable television series such as ''The Twilight Zone'' (1960), ''Bonanza'' (1961), and ''Little House on the Prairie'' (1974). Throughout her extensive career, she often took on character roles, frequently portraying mothers or strong female figures.She collaborated frequently with her sons. In 1957, Eileen Ryan married actor and director Leo Penn, whom she met during a rehearsal for a play in New York. Their marriage lasted until Leo Penn's death in 1998. The couple had three sons: *Michael Penn (born 1958), a musician and composer. *Sean Penn (born 1960), an Academy Award-winning actor and director. *Chris Penn (1965–2006), an actor.Ryan passed away on October 9, 2022, just a week before her 95th birthday, in Malibu, California.
