Edna Work Hall, also known as Women's Hall, is a historic residence hall on the campus of Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska. It was built in 1932 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
History and Naming
The building was constructed in 1932 to serve as a women's dormitory, replacing the 1914-built Sparks Hall in that role. It was originally named Women's Hall. It was later renamed in honor of Edna E. Work (1881–1950), who served as Dean of Women at Chadron State College from 1916 until 1947. Work was instrumental in helping to plan and design the building.
Architecture
Edna Work Hall was designed by architect Arthur D. Baker in the Art Deco style. The building is a three-story structure. It was expanded at the rear in 1960.
Description
The hall houses predominantly upper-division students. Each suite consists of two double- or single-occupancy bedrooms with a private bathroom and a shared common living room. Each floor contains a laundry room, a community area with a television, and a separate study room. Optional furnishings include twin beds, a chair, a desk, and a three-drawer dresser. The basement of Edna Work Hall includes additional community amenities.
National Register of Historic Places
Edna Work Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 1983, under reference number 83001087. It is part of the Chadron State College Historic Buildings Thematic Resources listing.
