Edmund Griffith

Edmund Griffith (1570 – 26 May 1637) was a Welsh Anglican bishop who served as the Bishop of Bangor from 1634 until his death in 1637.

Early life and education
Griffith was born in Lleyn, a promontory in Caernarfonshire (now Gwynedd), Wales. He was the son of Gruffydd ab Sion Gruffydd of Cevnamlwch and Catrin, daughter of Sir Richard Bulkeley of Baron Hill, Anglesey. He entered Oxford University as an exhibitioner of Brasenose College on 8 April 1587, though earlier sources suggest he may have initially been associated with Jesus College. He earned his Master of Arts degree in 1592.

Ecclesiastical career

  • 1599: Appointed rector of Llandwrog.
  • 1600: Became a canon of Bangor Cathedral.
  • 1604: Took up the rectorship of Llanbedrog, both livings being within the Diocese of Bangor.
  • 10 March 1605: Installed as Archdeacon of Bangor.
  • 9 September 1613: Elevated to Dean of Bangor.

Following the death of Bishop David Dolben, Griffith was elected Bishop of Bangor on 31 December 1633. His election was confirmed on 12 February 1634, and he was consecrated on 16 February 1634 at Lambeth by Archbishop William Laud. He was formally enthroned in the cathedral on 14 April 1634.

Death
Griffith died on 26 May 1637 and was interred in the choir of Bangor Cathedral.
