Edmund Guy Wilson Ross (September 7, 1826 – January 7, 1907) was an American attorney, politician, and judge who served as a United States Senator from Kansas and later as the governor of the New Mexico Territory.
Early life and education
- Born in Springville, Ohio, to James Ross, a farmer, and Mary (Guy) Ross.
- Attended common schools and studied law, gaining admission to the Ohio bar in 1852.
Legal and political career
- Practiced law in Ohio before moving to St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1854, where he continued his legal practice and became involved in local politics.
- Relocated to Lawrence, Kansas, in 1859, a center of the anti‑slavery movement, and was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court (1861–1864).
U.S. Senate (1866–1871)
- Elected as a Republican Senator from Kansas in 1866 during the Reconstruction era.
- Most noted for his decisive vote on May 26, 1868, during the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.
