Edmonton-Ottewell was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of Alberta. The district was created for the 1971 Alberta general election and was in existence until it was abolished in the 1993 electoral redistribution. It was named after the neighbourhood of Ottewell in the city of Edmonton, which formed a central part of the district’s territory.
Geography
The riding was situated in the eastern part of Edmonton and encompassed residential areas including the Ottewell neighbourhood and surrounding communities. Its boundaries were adjusted in subsequent redistributions during its existence, but it consistently covered a portion of Edmonton’s east side.
Electoral History
Edmonton-Ottewell elected a single Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) using the first‑past‑the‑post voting system. Throughout its lifespan, the district was represented primarily by members of the Progressive Conservative Party, which dominated Alberta politics during the period.
Abolition
In the 1993 redistribution, the Edmonton-Ottewell district was dissolved, and its area was divided among neighboring electoral districts, including Edmonton‑Calder, Edmonton‑Manning, and Edmonton‑Highlands.
Legacy
The former district’s name reflects the historical practice of naming Alberta’s electoral districts after prominent local communities, linking electoral geography with municipal neighbourhood identities.
