Edi Orioli (born 20 January 1962) is an Italian former professional motorbike rally raid competitor. He is best known for his successes in the Dakar Rally, where he secured three overall victories in the motorcycle category in 1990, 1994, and 1995, making him one of the most accomplished riders in the event’s history.

Early life and background
Orioli was born in Udine, Italy. He began his involvement with motorcycling at a young age, participating in local and national races before transitioning to off‑road rally competitions.

Rally career

  • Dakar Rally: Orioli’s first Dakar win came in 1990 aboard a Yamaha, a notable achievement as he was the first non‑French rider to win the motorcycle class that year. He subsequently won the rally again in 1994 and 1995, both times riding for the KTM factory team. His victories contributed to KTM’s growing prominence in rally raid events.
  • Other events: In addition to his Dakar successes, Orioli claimed overall victories in several other major rally raids, including the Pharaoh’s Rally (Egypt) and the Rallye des Pharaons. He also performed consistently in the Baja series and other international off‑road competitions throughout the 1990s.

Later activities
After retiring from competitive rallying, Orioli remained involved in the motorcycling community, participating in promotional events, offering mentorship to younger riders, and serving as an ambassador for the sport. He has also engaged in charitable initiatives, particularly those focused on road safety and youth development in Italy.

Legacy
Edi Orioli is regarded as one of Italy’s most successful rally raid motorcyclists. His three Dakar victories place him among a select group of riders who have won the event multiple times, and his career helped raise the profile of Italian competitors in the international rally raid arena.
