Edhi Handoko

Edhi Handoko (21 July 1960 – 9 June 2009) was an Indonesian chess player who held the title of International Master (IM). Born in Surakarta, Central Java, Handoko was one of Indonesia’s leading chess figures from the late 1970s through the early 2000s. He won the Indonesian Chess Championship multiple times, securing titles in 1981, 1984, and 1991. Handoko represented Indonesia in numerous Chess Olympiads, notably playing on the top board in the 1990 Olympiad in Novi Sad and contributing to the national team’s competitive performances on the international stage.

In addition to his national successes, Handoku achieved notable results in international tournaments, including a strong showing at the 1985 Asian Chess Championship, where he placed among the top finishers. His peak FIDE rating was 2470, recorded in January 1996, reflecting his status as one of the strongest players in the region during that period.

Handoko’s contributions extended beyond competition; he was involved in coaching and promoting chess within Indonesia, mentoring younger players and participating in chess administration. His death in 2009 was widely mourned by the Indonesian chess community, and he is remembered as a pioneering figure who helped elevate the profile of chess in his country.
