Eddie H. Price (April 9, 1916 – June 30, 1979) was an American football fullback who played college football at Louisiana State University (LSU) and professional football for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1970.
Early life and education
Eddie Price was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended high school in New Orleans, where he excelled in football, earning recognition that led to a scholarship at LSU.
College career
At LSU (1935–1939), Price played for the Tigers’ football team. He was a standout fullback, known for his powerful running and blocking. In 1939, he was selected as a consensus first‑team All‑American. His performance contributed to LSU’s successful seasons during the late 1930s, and he finished his collegiate career with a total of 2,296 rushing yards, a school record that stood for many years.
Professional career
Price was selected in the first round of the 1940 NFL Draft, seventh overall, by the New York Giants. He played for the Giants from 1940 to 1946, interrupted by service in the United States Navy during World War II (1943–1945). As a professional, he was known for his durability and versatility, serving as both a ball carrier and a blocker. During his NFL tenure, he accumulated 2,681 rushing yards, 27 touchdowns, and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1942.
Military service
During World War II, Price served in the United States Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Missouri and continued to play football in military service teams, maintaining his athletic profile while fulfilling his duties.
Post‑football career and legacy
After retiring from professional football, Price returned to Louisiana, where he worked in the oil and gas industry and remained active in community affairs. In 1970, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, recognizing his collegiate achievements. LSU honors his legacy through the “Eddie Price Award,” presented annually to the conference’s most outstanding offensive player in the SEC (Southeastern Conference) as part of the SEC Player of the Year awards.
Personal life
Eddie Price married Margaret “Peggy” Griffin in 1941; the couple had three children. His son, Eddie Price Jr., also became a professional football player, playing as a linebacker for the New York Giants from 1975 to 1983.
Death
Eddie Price died on June 30, 1979, in New Orleans at the age of 63. He is interred at Metairie Cemetery in Metairie, Louisiana.
