Eckhard I, Count of Scheyern (also spelled Ekkehard von Scheyern; c. 1044 – died before 11 May 1091) was an 11th-century Bavarian nobleman and a member of the early House of Scheyern, which later evolved into the House of Wittelsbach.
Life
Eckhard I was a son of Otto I, Count of Scheyern. His mother cannot be unambiguously determined because Otto I was first married to Haziga of Diessen (the widow of Count Herman of Kastl) and later to an unknown daughter of Count Meginhardt of Reichersbeuern; the exact date of Eckhard's birth is not known.
He served as Vogt (advocate) of the Bishopric of Freising from 1074 and as Vogt of Weihenstephan Abbey from 1082.
Marriage and children
Eckhard was married to Richardis (also spelled Richgard), a daughter of Ulric I, Margrave of Carniola and Sophia of Hungary. They had three sons:
- Udalrich I, Count of Scheyern (from 1130, provost of Freising)
- Otto IV, Count of Scheyern (Count Palatine of Bavaria from 1120; died 22 August 1123)
- Eckhard II of Scheyern (died c. 1135)
Legacy
Eckhard I is a key figure in the lineage of the Counts of Scheyern, a dynasty that later became the House of Wittelsbach, which ruled Bavaria for centuries.
