General Description
Echinolampas comprises a group of flattened, discoidal echinoids commonly referred to as sand dollars. Like other members of the order Clypeasteroida, individuals possess a rigid, test (shell) composed of fused calcareous plates. The test is typically oval to circular, with a relatively smooth dorsal surface marked by a petaloid arrangement of ambulacral pores. The ventral side bears a shallow, centrally positioned lunule (the “hole” characteristic of many sand dollars) through which water currents are expelled. Spines are short and fine, allowing the animal to burrow beneath the sediment surface.

Morphology

  • Test size: adult specimens range from approximately 20 mm to 80 mm in diameter, depending on species.
  • Colouration: live individuals are usually mottled grey to brown, acquiring a lighter, often white appearance after death due to the loss of pigments.
  • Ambulacral system: petaloid patterns are well developed, facilitating respiration and feeding.
  • Mouth and anus: located on the oral (ventral) side; the mouth is central, while the anus lies anterior to the mouth.

Ecology and Habitat
Members of Echinolampas inhabit shallow marine environments, predominantly on sandy or fine‑gravel substrates where they can partially bury themselves. They are found from the intertidal zone down to depths of about 100 m. The genus is primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic and Indo‑Pacific Oceans, with documented occurrences along the coasts of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia.

Feeding
Echinolampas are deposit feeders. They ingest sediment and extract organic detritus, microalgae, and microorganisms using specialized tube feet and a complex arrangement of cilia within the food groove that leads to the mouth.

Reproduction
Reproductive strategies are consistent with other irregular echinoids: broadcast spawning of gametes into the water column, followed by planktonic larval development (bipinnaria and then pluteus stages) before settlement and metamorphosis into juvenile sand dollars.

Species (selected)
The genus includes several recognized species; however, taxonomic revisions are ongoing, and species delimitations may vary among authorities. Notable species include:

  • Echinolampas laevigata (Lamarck, 1816) – one of the more widely reported species in the Caribbean.
  • Echinolampas cristata (L. Agassiz, 1863) – characterized by subtle radial ridges on the test.
  • Echinolampas reticulata (L. Agassiz, 1863) – distinguished by a reticulate pattern of pores.

Fossil Record
The genus has a fossil record extending from the Miocene to the present, indicating a long-standing presence in marine ecosystems. Fossil specimens are valuable for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, particularly for interpreting ancient near‑shore sedimentary environments.

Conservation Status
No species within Echinolampas are currently listed on the IUCN Red List. Their populations are generally considered stable, though localized impacts from coastal development, sedimentation, and pollution could affect specific populations.
