Relocation to the Wisconsin Territory
In 1835, Brigham moved westward to the region that would become the Wisconsin Territory, settling near the present‑day site of Janesville in Rock County. His arrival preceded the formal organization of the territory, and he was among the first permanent Euro‑American settlers in the area.

Political career

He served as the first Speaker of the Council, a position analogous to the later role of President of the state Senate.
- State legislature: After Wisconsin achieved statehood in 1848, Brigham was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing Rock County. He served multiple terms, during which he contributed to legislation concerning infrastructure, land development, and local governance.
- Local office: Brigham also held various county and municipal positions, including serving as a county judge and participating in the organization of Rock County’s governmental institutions.
Later life and death
Brigham continued to reside in Janesville, where he engaged in farming and local business activities. He remained a prominent community figure until his death on June 10 1861. He was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville.
Legacy
Ebenezer Brigham is remembered as a foundational figure in the settlement of Rock County and as an early leader in Wisconsin’s territorial and state governments. His contributions to the establishment of local institutions and his service during the Black Hawk War are noted in regional histories of Wisconsin.
