East Rochester is a village in Monroe County, New York, United States. It is an independent municipality situated immediately east of the city of Rochester and is part of the Greater Rochester metropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the village had a population of approximately 6,200 residents.
Geography
East Rochester occupies a land area of roughly 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²). The village is bounded by the towns of Pittsford to the north and west, and by Rochester to the south and east. The area lies within the Genesee River watershed, and its topography is characterized by gently rolling terrain typical of the Finger Lakes region.
History
The area that became East Rochester was originally inhabited by the Seneca nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. European settlement began in the early 19th century, primarily by farmers and craftsmen attracted to the fertile soil and proximity to the Erie Canal. The village was incorporated in 1909, largely to provide municipal services to a growing industrial workforce associated with nearby factories and rail yards. Throughout the early to mid‑20th century, East Rochester developed a mixed economy of light manufacturing, retail, and residential neighborhoods.

According to the 2020 census, East Rochester's population is predominantly White, with smaller African American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino communities. The median household income is comparable to the broader Monroe County average, and the village's housing stock consists mainly of single‑family homes built between the 1920s and 1970s.

East Rochester is governed by a mayor–council system. The mayor is elected at‑large, and a village board of trustees, also elected at‑large, enacts local ordinances, approves budgets, and oversees municipal services such as police, fire protection, water supply, and street maintenance.
