The Early Admissions Scheme (EAS), often referred to as JUPAS Early Admissions Scheme (JUPAS EAS), is a scheme administered through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) in Hong Kong. It allows secondary school students sitting for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination to apply for undergraduate programs at participating institutions before the main JUPAS application period concludes.
The primary purpose of the EAS is to allow universities to identify and admit exceptionally talented students who demonstrate outstanding achievements and potential in areas beyond academic results alone. These achievements can include excellence in sports, arts, science, community service, or other domains.
Applicants to the EAS typically need to fulfill specific criteria set by individual universities and programs. These criteria often involve a combination of predicted HKDSE results, performance in specific subjects relevant to the applied program, awards and recognition received for non-academic achievements, and a strong personal statement outlining their skills and experiences. Shortlisted candidates are often invited to attend interviews or participate in other assessment activities conducted by the universities.
Successful applicants under the EAS receive a conditional offer of admission from the university. This offer is usually contingent upon achieving specific HKDSE results in the final examinations, as stipulated by the university. If the student meets the conditional offer requirements, they are formally admitted to the program and their application through the main JUPAS round is effectively superseded by the EAS offer.
The EAS provides a pathway for students to secure a university place earlier and allows universities to identify and recruit exceptional talents who may not be accurately reflected solely by their academic scores. However, the competition for EAS places is typically high, and applicants are often required to demonstrate a high level of accomplishment and commitment in their chosen field of endeavor. Students who are unsuccessful in the EAS are still eligible to apply for programs through the main JUPAS application round.
