Eagle River (Cook Inlet)

The Eagle River is a 40 mi (64 km) long stream located in the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska, United States. Originating at Eagle Glacier in the Chugach Mountains within Chugach State Park, the river flows northwest and empties into Eagle Bay on the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet, approximately 9 mi (14 km) northeast of downtown Anchorage.

The river’s course includes several notable features: it intersects the historic Iditarod National Historic Trail near Crow Pass, receives the North Fork Eagle River from the right and the South Fork Eagle River from the left, and passes under Eagle River Loop Road, Glenn Highway, and through Joint Base Elmendorf‑Richardson before reaching Cook Inlet.

Recreation
Sections of the Eagle River are navigable for float‑plane, kayak, and canoe trips. River difficulty ranges from Class I (easy) to Class III (moderate) on the International Scale of River Difficulty, with rapids and potential logjams near Eagle River Campground.

Eagle River Nature Center
Located 12 mi (19 km) up Eagle River Road, the Eagle River Nature Center serves as a visitor hub for Chugach State Park. Operated in partnership with “Friends of the Eagle River Nature Center,” it offers educational programs, trail information, and access to the historic Crow Pass Trail, a 26‑mi (42‑km) backpacking route ending near Girdwood.

Climate
Climate data recorded at the Nature Center (elevation ≈ 520 ft / 158 m) show mean daily maximum temperatures ranging from 20.9 °F (‑6.2 °C) in January to 67.4 °F (19.7 °C) in July, with average annual precipitation of 22.55 in (573 mm).
