Duripelta egmont is a species of harvestman in the family Triaenonychidae, belonging to the order Opiliones. It is an arachnid endemic to New Zealand.
Taxonomy and Discovery
The species was formally described in 1954 by the New Zealand zoologist Raymond Robert Forster. The description was published in the "Canterbury Museum Bulletin" as part of an extensive survey titled The New Zealand Harvestmen (Sub-order Laniatores). Within the genus Duripelta, it is grouped with other small, ground-dwelling harvestmen characterized by specific configurations of the ocular tubercle and the structure of the male genitalia.
Distribution and Habitat
As indicated by its specific epithet, egmont, the species is associated with the Taranaki region on the North Island of New Zealand. The type specimens were originally collected from the vicinity of Mount Taranaki (formerly known as Mount Egmont).
The species resides primarily in indigenous forest environments. Like most members of the family Triaenonychidae, Duripelta egmont is typically found in the cryptic habitat provided by moist leaf litter, moss, and decaying wood on the forest floor. These environments provide the necessary humidity and prey for its survival.
Morphology and Biology
Specific morphological details, such as the exact dimensions of the scutum (the dorsal shield) and the spination of the pedipalps, are documented in taxonomic keys but are not widely summarized in general literature. As a member of the suborder Laniatores, it possesses robust, spiny pedipalps used for capturing small invertebrates. Unlike many other arachnids, harvestmen do not possess silk glands or venom glands.
There is currently no data regarding the population status or specific life cycle of Duripelta egmont beyond general characteristics shared by the genus Duripelta. It is considered a specialized component of New Zealand's soil-dwelling biodiversity.
