Dundaga is a large village in Talsi Municipality, Courland, Latvia. Historically, it served as the administrative center of Dundaga Parish and Dundaga Municipality until the administrative-territorial reform of Latvia in 2021, when it became part of the expanded Talsi Municipality.
Geography and Location
Dundaga is situated in the northern part of the Courland region of Latvia. It is located approximately 150 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Riga. The village is characterized by its relatively flat landscape, typical of the Courland lowlands, surrounded by forests and agricultural land. It holds a significant position as a gateway to the Livonian Coast (Lībiešu krasts), a culturally important area on the Baltic Sea inhabited by the indigenous Livonian people, whose traditional territories lie directly to the north of Dundaga.History
The history of Dundaga is intrinsically linked to its most prominent landmark, Dundaga Castle (Latvian: Dundagas pils). The castle, considered one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Courland, was originally constructed in the 13th century by the Riga Cathedral Chapter. Over centuries, it underwent numerous reconstructions and expansions, evolving from a fortified stronghold into a stately manor house. For over 300 years, it served as the center of the Dundaga estate, held by various noble families, most notably the von der Osten-Sacken family. The castle played a significant role in the local economy and social structure throughout the medieval and early modern periods. In the 20th century, following agrarian reforms in independent Latvia, the castle was nationalized and has since been utilized for various public purposes, including a school and a cultural center.During the period of Soviet occupation, Dundaga functioned as a local administrative center. After Latvia regained its independence, Dundaga became the center of its own municipality (Dundaga Municipality), which existed from 2009 until the administrative-territorial reform of 2021.
