Dryobotodes is a genus of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae, subfamily Xyleninae. The genus was first described by the entomologist Francis Walker in 1858.

Morphology
Members of Dryobotodes are medium‑sized noctuid moths, typically exhibiting a wingspan of 30–45 mm. The forewings are generally patterned with shades of brown, gray, and ochre, often featuring a distinctive kidney‑shaped (reniform) stigma and fine transverse lines. Hindwings tend to be paler, ranging from light gray to whitish. Sexual dimorphism is minimal, although males may possess slightly broader antennae.

Distribution and Habitat
The genus is primarily Palearctic in distribution. Species occur throughout most of Europe, extending eastward into temperate regions of Asia. Some species have been recorded in the Nearctic region, particularly in parts of North America. Dryobotodes moths inhabit deciduous and mixed woodlands, heathland, and other habitats where host plants are abundant.

Life Cycle and Ecology

  • Adult activity: Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to artificial light sources. Flight periods vary by species and latitude but generally span late spring to early autumn.
  • Larval host plants: Caterpillars are polyphagous, feeding on the foliage of a variety of hardwoods and shrubs, including oak (Quercus spp.), birch (Betula spp.), and willow (Salix spp.).
