Drenas

Drenas (Albanian: Drenas), also known as Gllogoc (Albanian: Gllogoc) or Glogovac (Serbian Cyrillic: Глоговац), is a town and municipality located in the Prishtina District of Kosovo. It is situated in the central part of Kosovo, within the geographical region known as Drenica.

Geography The municipality of Drenas is located in the central part of Kosovo, approximately 25 kilometers west of the capital city, Pristina. It is bordered by the municipalities of Fushë Kosovë to the east, Lipjan to the south-east, Malisheva to the south-west, Skënderaj to the north-west, and Vushtrri to the north-east. The terrain is characterized by hills and valleys, typical of the Drenica region.

History The Drenica region, including Drenas, has a long history, but it gained particular prominence in the late 20th century. During the Kosovo War (1998-1999), Drenas and its surrounding villages were central to the conflict due to their association with the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and heavy fighting occurred in the area. The region suffered significant destruction and displacement during this period. After the war, the town and municipality underwent reconstruction efforts.

Demographics According to post-war estimates, the population of the municipality of Drenas is predominantly Albanian. Before the 1999 conflict, there was a small Serbian minority and other communities, most of whom left the area during or after the war. The population density is higher in the town center compared to the surrounding rural villages.

Economy The economy of Drenas municipality is primarily based on agriculture, with farming and livestock raising being traditional activities. Small businesses, trade, and services also contribute to the local economy. Employment opportunities are limited, leading to some out-migration, particularly among younger residents seeking better prospects.
