Douglas Leckie

Douglas Leckie (August 14, 1899 – December 26, 1983) was a Canadian politician and municipal leader in British Columbia. He is primarily known for his service as the Mayor of Burnaby, a large municipality within the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

Early Life and Background

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Leckie later immigrated to Canada and settled in British Columbia. Prior to entering politics, he worked as an accountant.

Political Career

Leckie's political career began at the provincial level. He was elected as a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Burnaby riding in the 1949 British Columbia general election. He served in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia until 1951.

In 1951, Leckie transitioned to municipal politics and was elected as the Mayor of Burnaby. He served multiple consecutive terms as mayor, holding the office from 1951 until 1957. During his time as mayor, Burnaby experienced substantial population growth and urban development, reflecting the broader post-war expansion of the Vancouver metropolitan area.

Death

Douglas Leckie passed away on December 26, 1983, at the age of 84.
