Douglas Coward

Douglas Coward (born 1935, died 2004) was a prominent British publisher, best known for his long and influential career at George Allen & Unwin, where he served as Managing Director and played a pivotal role in the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's posthumous works.

Biography and Career

Coward joined the independent London publishing house George Allen & Unwin in 1963. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the company's Managing Director in 1968. During his tenure, he was instrumental in transforming the fortunes of the firm, which had been suffering financial difficulties.

His most notable achievement was overseeing the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion in 1977, four years after Tolkien's death. This monumental task involved working closely with Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien, to prepare the vast collection of mythological writings for publication. The Silmarillion became a global bestseller, ensuring the continued success and legacy of the Tolkien literary estate and solidifying Allen & Unwin's reputation.

Coward's leadership extended beyond Tolkien. He was known for his sharp business acumen, his dedication to authors, and his ability to navigate the evolving landscape of the publishing industry. He remained at the helm as the company merged with Bell & Hyman in 1986 to form Unwin Hyman.

Following the acquisition of Unwin Hyman by HarperCollins in 1990, Coward continued his career within the larger publishing conglomerate, holding senior positions until his retirement in 1995.

Legacy

Douglas Coward is remembered as a significant figure in 20th-century British publishing, particularly for his stewardship of the Tolkien phenomenon and his contributions to maintaining the independence and literary quality of George Allen & Unwin during a period of significant change in the industry.
