Doug Pettibone (born in Los Angeles, California) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and studio musician. He began playing guitar at the age of eight, receiving early instruction from Andy Summers of The Police, and later studied with jazz guitarist Eddie Lafreniere. Pettibone earned a scholarship to Pepperdine University‑Malibu, where he graduated in 1984 with a triple major in jazz guitar, classical guitar, and voice.
Pettibone’s career has spanned multiple genres—including rock, pop, jazz, R&B, country, blues, and roots—and he is known for his versatility on electric guitar, steel guitar, slide guitar, lap steel, mandolin, and hi‑string guitar. He has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists, such as Jewel (world tour 1999–2000), Tracy Chapman (2001 North American tour), Luciana Williams (multi‑instrumentalist, singer, and music director from 2002 for eight years), Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Joan Baez, Mark Knopfler, Sting, Marianne Faithfull, Ray LaMontagne, John Mayer (Born & Raised World Tour 2013), Lisa Marie Presley (2012 tour), and Zucchero (2016 world tour).
In addition to his work as a sideman, Pettibone has released solo material, including the self‑released albums The West Gate (2004) and Gone (2014). His extensive discography also includes contributions to recordings by artists such as Dave Koz, Catie Curtis, Joy Lynn White, Alejandro Escovedo, Joan Baez (Dark Chords on a Big Guitar, 2003), Vic Chesnutt, and many others.
Pettibone continues to be active in the music industry as both a performer and a collaborator across diverse musical projects.
