Doug Martsch (born September 16, 1969) is an American musician best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the indie rock band Built to Spill. He formed Built to Spill in Boise, Idaho, in 1992, and the group released its debut album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, in 1993. The band's subsequent releases, including There's Nothing Wrong with Love (1994), Perfect from Nowhere (1997), and the critically acclaimed Keep It Like a Secret (1999), helped establish Martsch as a prominent figure in the 1990s indie rock scene.
Early life and education
Martsch was raised in Boise, Idaho. He attended Boise State University, where he met bassist Brett Netson, another future member of Built to Spill. Prior to forming Built to Spill, Martsch performed in several local bands, including Sone and The Halo Benders (the latter a collaboration with Calvin Johnson of K Records).
Musical style and influence
Martsch is recognized for his distinctive, melodic guitar work and introspective lyricism. His playing often incorporates layered, echoing guitar lines and a blend of clean and distorted tones. Critics have compared his vocal style to that of Neil Young and his guitar approach to John Frusciante and Thurston Moore.
Solo work and collaborations
In addition to his work with Built to Spill, Martsch released a solo album, Now You Know It All (2005), under his own name. He has also contributed to other projects, including The Halo Benders, and has participated in recordings with artists such as The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse.

Built to Spill released the album There’s Nothing Wrong with Love (2022), marking the band's first full-length studio album in over a decade. Martsch continues to tour and record with Built to Spill, maintaining an active presence in the indie music community.
