Geography
Dorsey is situated in central Maryland, approximately 25 mi west of Baltimore and 20 mi north‑east of Washington, D.C. The community lies near the intersection of Maryland Route 32 and Interstate 95, and the Patapsco River watershed influences the local topography.

The area that is now Dorsey was originally farmland in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its name derives from the Dorsey family, early landowners in Howard County.
