Donvale is a residential suburb located within the metropolitan area of Melbourne, the capital city of the state of Victoria, Australia. It lies approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) northeast of Melbourne's central business district and is part of the City of Manningham local government area.
Geography
Donvale is bounded by the suburbs of Ringwood to the west, Bayswater to the east, and Vermont to the south. The suburb is situated on relatively flat terrain, with an elevation of around 100 metres (328 ft) above sea level. The Mullum Mullum Creek, a tributary of the Yarra River, runs through the eastern part of the suburb, providing a natural corridor and recreational space.
History
The area now known as Donvale was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. European settlement began in the mid‑19th century, with the land primarily used for agriculture, especially orchards and market gardens. The name "Donvale" derives from the combination of "Don," referencing the nearby Don River (an early name for the Mullum Mullum Creek), and "vale," meaning a valley. The suburb was officially gazetted in 1971 as part of Melbourne’s post‑war suburban expansion.
