The district functions as a local administrative unit under the jurisdiction of the Meishan municipal government, managing a mix of urban neighborhoods, towns, and rural villages. The district is connected to the provincial transportation network via national highways and regional rail lines, facilitating links to Chengdu, the provincial capital, and other surrounding cities.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Dongpo” (literally “Eastern Slope”) commemorates the celebrated Song‑dynasty poet, essayist, and statesman Su Shi (1037–1101), commonly known as Su Dongpo. Su Dongpo was born in the area that now comprises Dongpo District, and his literary legacy has been a source of cultural identity for the region. The district was formally named “Dongpo” in 2004 to honor the poet’s historical association with the locale.
