Don Wilson (announcer)

Donald "Don" Wilson (September 1, 1900 – April 25, 1982) was an American announcer and radio personality, best known for his long-running association with comedian Jack Benny. With his distinctive booming voice, Wilson served as the announcer and a regular cast member on The Jack Benny Program for over four decades, across both its radio and television incarnations.

Early Life and Career Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Wilson began his career in radio in the 1920s. Initially a sportscaster, he soon transitioned to general announcing and commercial work, gaining recognition for his clear diction and powerful vocal delivery. His early radio work included various local and national programs.

The Jack Benny Program Wilson joined Jack Benny's radio program in 1933, becoming an integral part of the show's ensemble cast alongside Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, and Dennis Day. His role extended beyond merely announcing sponsors and segment introductions; he frequently participated in comedic sketches, often serving as Benny's good-natured foil or the target of Benny's gentle barbs. Wilson's portrayal often highlighted his love for food and his role as a commercial pitchman, particularly for Lucky Strike cigarettes, a major sponsor of the show. His catchphrases, such as "Lucky Strike means fine tobacco," became widely recognized and parodied.

When The Jack Benny Program transitioned to television in the 1950s, Wilson continued in his role, maintaining the same dynamic with Benny and the cast. His presence provided a continuity that helped the show adapt to the new medium. He remained with Benny until the latter's death in 1974, marking one of the longest continuous associations in entertainment history.

Other Work In addition to his work with Jack Benny, Wilson was a prolific announcer for other radio and television programs and commercials. He also lent his voice to animated productions, including some Warner Bros. cartoons where he often played an announcer. He hosted his own radio program, The Don Wilson Show, for a period in the 1940s.

Legacy Don Wilson is remembered as one of the quintessential radio announcers of the Golden Age of Radio, whose personality and comedic timing made him a vital part of one of broadcasting's most beloved and enduring programs. He passed away in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 81.
