Early Life

Pumphrey was born in North Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended [[Canyon Springs High School]] in North Las Vegas, where he was a standout in both football and track. As a senior, he rushed for 1,472 yards and 17 touchdowns, earning him numerous accolades and attracting attention from college recruiters.

College Career

Pumphrey played college football for the [[San Diego State Aztecs football|San Diego State Aztecs]] from 2013 to 2016.

Freshman Season (2013)

As a true freshman, Pumphrey played in all 13 games, rushing for 605 yards and 8 touchdowns on 131 carries. He quickly established himself as a dynamic playmaker in the Aztecs' backfield.

Sophomore Season (2014)

Pumphrey had a breakout sophomore season, becoming a focal point of the San Diego State offense. He rushed for 1,867 yards and 20 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Mountain West honors. His rushing yardage that season ranked among the top nationally.

Junior Season (2015)

He continued his impressive performance in his junior year, tallying 1,653 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Pumphrey was once again named first-team All-Mountain West, leading the Aztecs to a [[Mountain West Conference football championship game|Mountain West Conference Championship]].

Senior Season (2016)

Pumphrey's senior season was historic. On December 17, 2016, he broke the official NCAA Division I FBS career rushing record, surpassing [[Ron Dayne]]'s previous mark of 6,397 yards. Pumphrey finished his collegiate career with 6,405 rushing yards. For his achievements, he was recognized as a consensus All-American and was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. He also led the Aztecs to their second consecutive Mountain West Championship. (Note: The NCAA's official career rushing records have undergone revisions, retroactively including bowl game statistics for players prior to 2002, which has since placed Ron Dayne at a higher overall total.)

Professional Career

Baltimore Ravens

Pumphrey was selected by the [[Baltimore Ravens]] in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2017 [[2017 NFL Draft|NFL Draft]]. Expected to contribute as a change-of-pace back and return specialist, his rookie season was unfortunately derailed by a hamstring injury suffered in the preseason. He was placed on [[Injured reserve|injured reserve]] before the start of the regular season and did not play.

Later Career

Pumphrey was waived by the Ravens in September 2018. He subsequently had brief stints with the practice squads of the [[Philadelphia Eagles]] and the [[Washington Redskins]] later that year but did not make a regular-season appearance for either team. He retired from professional football shortly thereafter.
