Domiporta sigillata

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Class: Gastropoda
  • Clade: Caenogastropoda
  • Superfamily: Muricoidea

Authority
The species was originally described as Mitra sigillata by L. A. Reeve in 1845. Subsequent taxonomic revisions have placed it in the genus Domiporta, a member of the Mitridae (commonly known as mitre or miter snails).

Synonyms

  • Mitra sigillata Reeve, 1845 (original combination)
  • Other synonymised names, if any, are recorded in marine taxonomic databases such as the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).

Morphology
Domiporta sigillata is a marine gastropod possessing the characteristic elongated, fusiform shell typical of the Mitridae. Shells in this family generally exhibit a high spire, a well‑developed siphonal canal, and a smooth to finely sculptured surface. The specific epithet “sigillata” (Latin for “sealed” or “stamped”) suggests a pattern of distinct markings or coloration, a feature noted in the original description, although detailed coloration patterns vary among specimens.

Distribution
Records indicate that Domiporta sigillata occurs in the Indo‑West Pacific region. Verified localities include marine habitats around the Philippines, Indonesia, and surrounding archipelagic waters. Precise range limits are subject to ongoing marine biodiversity surveys.

Habitat
As with other mitrid snails, D. sigillata inhabits sandy or coral‑reef substrates in tropical to subtropical marine environments, typically at depths ranging from the intertidal zone to several tens of metres. It is a predatory snail, feeding on small invertebrates, a behavior characteristic of the family.

Ecological and Conservation Status
No specific assessment for Domiporta sigillata appears in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Consequently, its conservation status has not been formally evaluated, and it is not listed among protected or threatened marine species.
