Definition Dominic Charles Roberts Grieve KC is a British barrister and former politician who served as the Attorney General for England and Wales from 2010 to 2014.
Overview A member of the Conservative Party until 2019, Dominic Grieve represented the constituency of Beaconsfield as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1997 to 2019. Known for his strong pro-European stance, he became a prominent and vocal critic of the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit), which ultimately led to his expulsion from the Conservative Party in 2019.
Characteristics Before his appointment as Attorney General, Grieve held several shadow ministerial roles, including Shadow Attorney General (1999–2003, 2005–2009) and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice (2009–2010). As Attorney General during the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, he was the chief legal adviser to the Crown and the government. Grieve is noted for his adherence to the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty. After the 2016 EU referendum, he emerged as a leading figure among Conservative MPs advocating for a closer relationship with the EU or a second referendum. His repeated votes against the government's Brexit policy led to the removal of the Conservative whip in September 2019 by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He subsequently sat as an independent MP and stood unsuccessfully as an independent candidate in the 2019 general election.
