Doe Avedon

Doe Avedon (born Elizabeth Dorcas Nowell; April 7, 1925 – December 18, 2011) was an American fashion model and actress. She is frequently cited as the professional inspiration for the character Jo Stockton, portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1957 musical film Funny Face, which was loosely based on the early career of Avedon and her first husband, photographer Richard Avedon.

Born in Westbury, New York, she was working as a bookkeeper at a bank when she met Richard Avedon. They married in 1944, and he subsequently began photographing her for Harper's Bazaar. Her modeling career flourished under his mentorship, as he crafted her image and helped establish her as a prominent figure in the fashion industry during the late 1940s.

Avedon transitioned into acting in the late 1940s. She made her Broadway debut in the 1948 production of The Young and Fair, for which she received a Theatre World Award. Her film career began in the 1950s, with her most notable role being the flight attendant Miss Spalding in the 1954 aviation drama The High and the Mighty. Other screen credits include the biographical musical Deep in My Heart (1954) and the television series Big Town.

Following her divorce from Richard Avedon in 1949, she married Dan Matthews, with whom she had children. After Matthews' death in a car accident, she later married film director Don Siegel in 1957; they divorced in 1975.

Doe Avedon retired from professional acting in the late 1950s to focus on her family. She died of pneumonia on December 18, 2011, in Encino, California, at the age of 86.
