Division of Bendigo

Definition
The Division of Bendigo is a federal electoral district (also called a division) for the Australian House of Representatives, located in the state of Victoria.

Overview
Created at the time of Australia’s first federal election in 1901, the Division of Bendigo has continuously elected one member to the House of Representatives. The electorate covers the regional city of Bendigo and surrounding rural towns and suburbs, extending across the central north‑west of Victoria. Over its history, the seat has alternated between the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party of Australia (and its predecessor parties), reflecting its mixed urban‑rural demographic.

Etymology/Origin
The division is named after the city of Bendigo, which itself derives its name from a hill known as "Bendigo’s Hill". The hill was named by gold‑miners in the 1850s after the English bare‑knuckle champion William "Bendigo" Thompson, whose fighting style was likened to the miners’ vigor.
