Distinctive Software

Distinctive Software Ltd. was a Canadian video game development company founded in 1982 by Don Mattrick and Jeff Sember in Vancouver, British Columbia. The company initially focused on creating software for home computers such as the Apple II, Commodore 64, and IBM PC, producing a range of titles that included sports simulations, action games, and educational software.

Key milestones and developments:

  • Early Publications (1983–1986): Distinctive Software released several notable titles, including Might and Magic (1985) and AFL Finals (1985). The company’s products were distributed primarily through North American and European markets.

  • Acquisition by Electronic Arts (1991): In 1991, Electronic Arts (EA) acquired Distinctive Software for an estimated US$5 million. Following the acquisition, the studio was rebranded as EA Canada. The reorganization positioned the former Distinctive Software team as a primary development hub for EA’s sports franchises.

  • Legacy Contributions: Under the EA Canada banner, the studio became responsible for major series such as FIFA Soccer, NHL Hockey, and NBA Live. The programming and design expertise cultivated at Distinctive Software laid the groundwork for these globally successful titles.

  • Corporate Evolution: Over subsequent decades, EA Canada expanded its operations, eventually merging with other EA studios and contributing to a broad portfolio of sports and action games. The original Distinctive Software brand ceased to exist as a separate entity after the rebranding.

Distintive Software’s impact is recognized in video game history for its role in pioneering early sports simulation titles and for forming the foundation of one of the largest sports game development studios in the world.
