Tim Finn had been suffering from panic attacks during the period leading up to the album's recording. He co-wrote "Dirty Creature" as a means of relief for his condition. According to Neil Finn, Tim was going through significant personal turmoil at the time, and the song's lyrics reflect themes of anxiety, internal struggle, and a sense of being besieged by a menacing psychological force. The lyrics describe a "Dirty Creature" that emerges "from the bottom of a big black lake," symbolizing intrusive thoughts or a panic-like presence.
Release and Reception
The single was released on Mushroom Records in March 1982. It charted strongly in Oceania, reaching number 3 on the New Zealand Singles Chart and number 6 on the Australian Kent Music Report chart. The B-side was "Make Sense of It."

Other Uses
"Dirty Creature" is also the title of a 1995 short film directed by Richard Scott. The film, approximately 12 minutes in length, depicts a little girl and her dog impersonating a crocodile at the edge of a muddy bog and embarking on a chaotic rampage through the suburbs of Wellington, New Zealand. It was produced by WingNut Films and the New Zealand Film Commission.
