Die Gleichen

Die Gleichen is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Göttingen, in the federal state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Germany. The municipality is situated in the southern part of the district, approximately 11 kilometres (7 mi) southeast of the city of Göttingen. It is named after the “Gleichen” hills (German: die Gleichen), a pair of prominent, forested elevations that dominate the local landscape.

Geography
The municipality covers an area of roughly 72 square kilometres (28 sq mi) and lies within the Leine River basin. The two hills that give the municipality its name rise to elevations of about 352 m and 368 m above sea level, respectively. The terrain is characterised by rolling hills, mixed forests, and agricultural land. The surrounding region is part of the historic Upper Harz and Weser Uplands.

Administrative structure
Die Gleichen comprises several constituent villages (Ortsteile), the largest of which are Diex, Leinefelde, and Sülze. These villages were merged into a single administrative entity during the municipal reforms of the 1970s. The municipal council (Gemeinderat) is elected for five‑year terms, and the mayor (Bürgermeister) heads the local executive administration.

History
The area has been settled since the early Middle Ages. The name “Gleichen” derives from the Middle High German word glīche meaning “equal” or “identical,” referring to the two hills of nearly the same height. Both hills were historically fortified; medieval castles stood on each summit and served as strategic lookout points overseeing the surrounding valleys. The castles were largely destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) and later fell into ruin. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region was primarily agrarian, with the development of modest industry in the nearby city of Göttingen influencing local economies.

Demographics
As of the most recent official count (2023), Die Gleichen has a population of approximately 6 500 inhabitants. The population density is low, reflecting the predominantly rural character of the municipality. The demographic profile shows an aging population, a common trend in many parts of rural Lower Saxony.

Economy and infrastructure
The local economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and small‑scale manufacturing. Several farms in the municipality specialise in cereal cultivation and livestock husbandry. Proximity to Göttingen provides residents with access to broader employment markets, higher education institutions, and healthcare facilities. Transportation links include the Bundesstraße 27 (B27) that runs near the municipality, and regional railway services available at nearby stations in Göttingen and Seesen.
