Dick de Fegely

Richard "Dick" de Fegely (born 19 May 1931) is a former Australian sportsman who achieved distinction in both Australian rules football and first-class cricket. He played Australian rules football for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and represented Victoria in first-class cricket.

Early Life and Education Born Richard de Fegely in Melbourne, Victoria, he attended Melbourne Grammar School, where he distinguished himself as a promising athlete across multiple sports.

Australian Rules Football Career De Fegely joined the Melbourne Football Club, making his VFL debut in 1952. A versatile player, he played 14 senior games and kicked 15 goals for the Demons over the 1952 and 1953 seasons. His football career was often balanced with his burgeoning cricket commitments.

Cricket Career A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler, De Fegely played 11 first-class matches for Victoria between the 1953/54 and 1956/57 seasons. In his first-class career, he scored 383 runs at an average of 25.53, with a highest score of 72. With the ball, he took 17 wickets at an average of 42.17, including best bowling figures of 4/13.

Dual Sporting Prowess De Fegely is remembered as one of the relatively few Australian athletes of his era to compete at the highest state and national levels in two distinct professional sports, showcasing exceptional talent and dedication.
