Richard "Dick" Doyle (active c. 1920s–1940s) was an Irish hurler who played as a forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Widely regarded as one of the county's most iconic hurlers, he was a key figure during a golden era for Kilkenny hurling, winning multiple All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship titles.
Early Life and Club Career
Born in County Kilkenny, Dick Doyle played his club hurling with the Mooncoin club. He was a central figure in Mooncoin's success during the 1920s and 1930s, helping them secure several Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship titles. His prowess at club level quickly brought him to the attention of the county selectors.
Inter-county Career
Doyle's inter-county career with the Kilkenny senior team spanned from the early 1920s to the late 1930s. He quickly established himself as a prolific scorer and a formidable presence in the Kilkenny attack, primarily playing at full-forward or centre-forward. Known for his powerful striking and goal-scoring ability, he became a cornerstone of a Kilkenny side that consistently challenged for national honours.
A defining moment in his career came in the 1932 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final against Clare. As captain, Doyle famously scored the winning goal in the dying moments of the match, securing the Liam MacCarthy Cup for Kilkenny and cementing his legendary status. He also played a crucial role in Kilkenny's All-Ireland victories in 1922, 1933, 1935, and 1939. His career was marked by significant rivalries, particularly with the Tipperary and Limerick teams of the era, which often resulted in classic encounters. Doyle's leadership and skill were instrumental in Kilkenny's dominance during this period.
