Diabolepis

Diabolepis is an extinct genus of early sarcopterygian (lobe‑finned) fishes that lived during the Early Devonian period, approximately 410–400 million years ago. Fossil specimens have been recovered primarily from Lower Devonian strata in what is now Yunnan Province, southwestern China.

Diabolepis possessed a combination of primitive and derived features characteristic of early lungfishes:

  • Skull: Broad, flattened skull roof with dermal bone ornamentation; the eye sockets (orbits) are positioned laterally.
  • Dentition: Paired, marginal tooth plates bearing numerous small, conical teeth, a condition considered intermediate between primitive sarcopterygians and more derived dipnoans.
  • Fin Structure: Robust pectoral and pelvic fins supported by endochondral elements, suggesting limited but functional limb‑like movement.
  • Vertebral Column: A notochordal core with a series of rudimentary vertebral centra, typical of early osteichthyans.

Overall body size is inferred to have been modest, with estimated total lengths of 10–15 cm based on fossil fragment dimensions.

Phylogenetic Significance

Diabolepis occupies an important position in the evolutionary narrative of lungfishes (Dipnoi) and tetrapods. Its mosaic of traits supports the hypothesis that early dipnoans diverged from other sarcopterygians shortly after the appearance of the first bony fishes. The genus is often cited in discussions of the transition from aquatic to terrestrial vertebrates because its fin morphology and cranial features illustrate incremental adaptations toward weight‑bearing limbs and air‑breathing capability.

Paleoenvironment

The sedimentary context of Diabolepis fossils indicates a shallow, freshwater depositional environment—likely riverine floodplains or deltaic systems—characterized by fine-grained mudstones and occasional volcanic ash layers. These conditions would have facilitated the preservation of delicate skeletal elements.

History of Study

Since its initial description, Diabolepis has been referenced in several comparative studies of early dipnoan anatomy and phylogeny. Notable works include:
