Definition
Dharampal Gulati (1923 – 2020) was an Indian businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist best known for leading the spice manufacturing company MDH (Mahashian Di Hatti) and for his public persona as “MDH Baba”.
Overview
Born on 27 April 1923 in Sialkot, then part of British India (now Pakistan), Dharampal Gulati moved to Delhi after the Partition of 1947. He joined the family business MDH, which had been founded in 1919 by his father‑in‑law, Mahashay Chunni Lal, and later expanded under his stewardship. Gulati played a pivotal role in transforming MDH from a regional spice producer into one of India’s largest and most recognizable spice brands, with a presence in over 100 countries.
Under his leadership, MDH introduced a wide range of blended spices and packaged them in distinctive orange jars bearing his likeness. Gulati became a household figure through extensive advertising campaigns that featured his image and the tagline “MDH – Taste of India”. He was also noted for his modest lifestyle, despite becoming a billionaire; he continued to reside in a modest home in Old Delhi and was known for his daily routine of walking and religious devotion.
Gulati’s philanthropic activities included donations to hospitals, educational institutions, and religious causes. He established the MDH Charitable Trust, which funded medical camps, scholarships, and disaster relief efforts. He passed away on 3 December 2020 in Delhi at the age of 97.
