Dexter is a village located in Chaves County, New Mexico, United States. Situated in the southeastern part of the state, it is part of the Roswell, New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village is primarily an agricultural community, known for its fertile lands within the Pecos River Valley.

History

The area around Dexter was settled in the late 19th century, primarily by farmers drawn to the Pecos River for irrigation. The village was officially incorporated in 1907. It was named after W.P. Dexter, a prominent local rancher and landholder who was instrumental in the development of the community. Early economic activity revolved around growing alfalfa, cotton, and various other crops, supported by the Hondo River and Pecos River irrigation projects. The establishment of schools and churches helped solidify Dexter as a permanent settlement.
