Derrick Adams

Derrick Adams (born 1970) is an American contemporary artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture, video, installation, and performance. He is noted for exploring themes related to African American cultural identity, community narratives, and the intersections of popular culture with personal experience.

Early life and education
Adams was born in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts from Northwestern University in 2000.

Career
Since the early 2000s, Adams has exhibited extensively in the United States and internationally. Notable solo exhibitions include shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. His work was featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial, and he has participated in group exhibitions at institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the National Museum of African Art.

Adams’s artistic approach often incorporates mixed media, combining hand-painted elements with found objects, digital imagery, and text. Recurring motifs in his work include references to sports, music, advertising, and everyday objects, which he uses to comment on the construction of social narratives and communal memory. He frequently employs a bright, graphic aesthetic and utilizes repetition to emphasize cultural signifiers.

Public collections
Works by Derrick Adams are held in the permanent collections of several major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Awards and recognition
Adams has received numerous honors, such as a 2016 United States Artists Fellowship, a 2018 Creative Capital Award, and a 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship. He has also been granted residencies at the MacDowell Colony and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
