Deron McBee (born August 23, 1961) is an American actor, bodybuilder, and former professional wrestler. He gained significant recognition for his role as 'Malibu' on the popular television series American Gladiators during its original run (1989-1996). McBee is also widely known for his appearances in various action films throughout the 1990s, often portraying physically imposing characters.
Early Life and Bodybuilding Career Born in the United States, McBee developed an early interest in fitness and bodybuilding. His dedication to the sport led him to compete in various contests, culminating in a notable victory as Mr. California. His impressive physique laid the foundation for his later career in entertainment.
American Gladiators: Malibu In 1989, McBee joined the cast of the syndicated athletic competition show American Gladiators. He quickly became one of the most popular Gladiators under the persona 'Malibu,' a charismatic, surf-culture-inspired character. Known for his blonde hair, tanned physique, and confident demeanor, Malibu excelled in events like Joust, The Wall, and Powerball, becoming a fan favorite and a memorable figure of 90s television. He remained a core member of the cast until the show concluded its original run in 1996.
Acting Career Leveraging his fame from American Gladiators and his imposing physical presence, McBee transitioned into an acting career, primarily in action films and television shows. He frequently played tough, muscular, or villainous roles.
One of his most discussed roles, though not ultimately seen onscreen, was his initial casting as the four-armed Shokan warrior Goro in the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat. While McBee spent time rehearsing and preparing for the role, the production team ultimately decided to use a combination of animatronics and voice acting for Goro due to the complexity of the suit and the desire for a non-human portrayal. Kevin Michael Richardson provided Goro's voice, and Tom Woodruff Jr. performed the suit work. Despite not appearing as Goro in the final cut, McBee is often referenced in the film's production history.
Other notable film and television appearances include:
- The Perfect Weapon (1991)
- Cyborg 2 (1993)
- Batman Forever (1995) - Uncredited role as a thug
- Robot Wars (1993)
- Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite (1996)
- Walker, Texas Ranger (1997) - Guest appearance
Professional Wrestling While primarily known for American Gladiators and acting, McBee also made sporadic appearances in the world of professional wrestling, often capitalizing on his 'Malibu' persona. His wrestling career was not as extensive or mainstream as his other endeavors but allowed him to interact with fans in a different athletic context.
Legacy Deron McBee remains a recognizable figure, largely due to his enduring popularity as 'Malibu' from American Gladiators, a show that holds a significant place in 1990s pop culture. His acting roles further cemented his image as an action star of that era.
