Dermott Monteith (15 July 1943 – 28 August 2023) was a Northern Irish international cricketer who played for Ireland and several English county teams. A left-arm orthodox spin bowler, Monteith was a prominent figure in Irish cricket for over two decades and also had a significant career in English county cricket.
Early Life and Career
Born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Monteith began his cricketing career in Northern Ireland. His talent as a left-arm spinner was quickly recognized, and he made his debut for the Ireland national cricket team in 1964.
County Cricket Career
Monteith's performances for Ireland attracted attention from English county clubs. He joined Middlesex County Cricket Club in 1967, where he played until 1974. During his time at Middlesex, he established himself as a consistent wicket-taker, contributing to the team's success in the County Championship and one-day competitions.
He later moved to Ulster Grasshoppers, a representative team, and continued to play club cricket in Ireland, remaining a key player in the Northern Cricket Union.

He was Ireland's leading wicket-taker for many years, known for his subtle variations, flight, and ability to spin the ball. His most famous performance came in 1969 when Ireland famously defeated the touring West Indies team at Sion Mills; Monteith took 7 wickets for 29 runs in the second innings to secure a historic victory. He played in over 100 matches for Ireland, including numerous first-class and List A fixtures against touring international sides and in various representative competitions.
