Derian Hatcher

Derian John Hatcher (born June 4, 1972) is an American former professional ice‑hockey defenseman and current co‑owner of the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Early life and education
Hatcher was born in Sterling Heights, Michigan, United States. He played junior hockey for the Michigan State University Spartans before entering the National Hockey League (NHL) draft.

Professional playing career
Hatcher was selected 108th overall in the sixth round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. He made his NHL debut in the 1992–93 season and played for four teams over a 16‑season career:

  • Minnesota North Stars / Dallas Stars (1992–2002)
  • Detroit Red Wings (2002–2003)
  • Philadelphia Flyers (2003–2008)

He was known for his physical style of play and strong defensive presence. Hatcher served as captain of the Dallas Stars from 1999 to 2002, becoming the first American‑born captain to win the Stanley Cup when the Stars captured the championship in 1999. Internationally, he represented the United States, winning a gold medal at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and competing in the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Post‑playing career
After retiring as a player in 2008, Hatcher transitioned to coaching and management. He was appointed head coach and general manager of the Sarnia Sting in 2015, a role he held until 2019. In 2020, he became co‑owner of the Sting, overseeing the organization’s operations.
