Derek Walcott Square

Derek Walcott Square is a public urban square located in the city of Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia, a Caribbean island nation. The square serves as a central civic space within the historic downtown area and is bounded by major thoroughfares, including Upper Marlborough Street, St. John's Street, and St. Lawrence Street.

History
The site originally functioned as a colonial-era marketplace and was known by various names, including “Place d'Armes,” reflecting its use as a military parade ground during French and subsequently British rule. Over time, the square evolved into a commercial and social hub, featuring market stalls, government offices, and public monuments.

In 2010, following the death of Nobel laureate poet Derek Walcott (1930–2017), the Government of Saint Lucia officially renamed the square in his honor. The renaming was intended to commemorate Walcott’s contributions to Caribbean literature and his role as a cultural ambassador for Saint Lucia. A bronze bust of Derek Walcott, created by a local sculptor, was installed within the square as a focal point of the dedication ceremony.

Physical Description
The square is paved with stone cobblestones and includes landscaped areas with tropical foliage, benches, and lighting. It is adjacent to several historic buildings, such as St. John’s Anglican Cathedral and the Castries Market, which collectively contribute to the architectural heritage of the area. The space is commonly used for public events, including cultural festivals, political rallies, and community gatherings.

Cultural Significance
Derek Walcott Square functions as both a functional urban space and a symbolic site reflecting Saint Lucia’s cultural identity. By bearing the name of Derek Walcott, the square highlights the nation’s literary legacy and serves as a point of reference for both residents and visitors interested in the island’s artistic history.
