Derek Sealy

Derek Sealy (14 July 1944 – 11 May 2020) was a Barbadian [[cricketer]] who played for [[Barbados national cricket team|Barbados]] in [[First-class cricket|first-class cricket]] and [[List A cricket|List A cricket]] from the 1960s to the 1970s. Primarily a [[wicket-keeper]] and a right-handed [[batsman]], Sealy was a consistent performer at the regional level, though he never played [[Test cricket]] for the [[West Indies cricket team]].

Early Life and Career

Born in [[Bridgetown]], [[Barbados]], Derek Sealy showed early promise as a cricketer. He made his first-class debut for Barbados in the [[1963–64 West Indies cricket season]] at the age of 19.

Domestic Career

Sealy was a fixture in the Barbados side throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He was known for his tidy wicket-keeping and his solid, reliable batting in the middle order. He played a total of 56 first-class matches, scoring 2,059 runs at an average of 25.41, including two centuries. Behind the stumps, he took 82 catches and completed 18 stumpings. His List A career spanned 23 matches, where he scored 301 runs and took 14 catches with 5 stumpings.

One of his career highlights was a century (101 not out) against the touring [[English cricket team in the West Indies in 1967–68|England XI]] in 1968, playing for a combined team. He also captained Barbados in a few matches.

Despite his strong domestic performances, particularly in the [[Shell Shield]], Sealy faced stiff competition for the West Indies wicket-keeper spot from players like [[Rohan Kanhai]] (who also kept wickets) and later [[Deryck Murray]], and consequently never earned a Test cap.

Later Life and Death

After his playing career, Sealy remained involved in cricket in various capacities. He passed away on 11 May 2020 at the age of 75.
